After graduating from UCLA and the University of California, Santa Barbara, Dr. Dixon took a faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan in 1998.  In the Fall of 2003, he accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 

 

Professor Dixon is a media effects scholar dedicated to investigating the portrayal of people of color in the mass media and the impact of these images on audiences. Professor Dixon's latest work investigates stereotyping in news and music contexts.  He has been honored as a faculty fellow with the Center on Democracy in a Multiracial Society for a research initiative aimed at studying the content and effects of Hurricane Katrina coverage.  He has also been named as an invited fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
