Academic Advising
The Academic Advising Office in Speech Communication serves all SPCM majors in their academic planning, career and graduate school searches, and in finding resources of benefit across the campus and community. We are also here to assist those students interested in transferring into the major, or learning more about the field of Speech Communication. The office is full of career resources and assistance from the advising staff.

Internships: We offer credit for two different types of internships. SPCM 204 is a teaching internship in which a student assists an instructor with teaching a class. You must be a junior or senior, have at least a 3.5 GPA in the major and a 3.0 cum GPA and the endorsement of an instructor for the course in which you wish to intern. To apply, download the application form in PDF version here or go to 241 Lincoln Hall to ask for the application form and put the completed form in Dr. Ruth Anne Clark’s mailbox in 241 LH.
We also encourage our students to intern for various for-profit and non-for-profit businesses and governmental offices. For more information, contact Dr. Robert Husband (rhusband@uiuc.edu) or Jennifer Knapp (jkknapp@uiuc.edu).
SPCM Leaders: Speech Communication Leaders are outstanding undergraduate SPCM majors who are selected to act as ambassadors for the department. Speech Communication Leaders work closely with faculty on new initiatives designed to help the department continue to offer a high-quality education to its majors. Undergraduate students who have a 3.25 GPA in the major are welcome to apply. First-year students with an ACT score of 28 or higher are also encouraged to apply. Check this website regularly for further information on this program.
Transfer Student Buddy Program: Many transfer students feel “lost” upon arriving at the university until they make friends who teach them the ropes. The Transfer Student Buddy Program aims to preempt such confusion by teaming new transfer students with a seasoned transfer student volunteer who will offer guidance to U of I culture and institutional norms. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Dr. Grace Giorgio giorgio@uiuc.edu
Speak at Graduation: We invite SPCM majors to audition to speak at the SPCM graduation in May. Information will be available beginning of spring semester.
