What are Speech Communication Leaders?
Speech Communication Leaders are outstanding undergraduate students who are selected to act as ambassadors for the department. Speech Communication Leaders work closely with faculty on initiatives designed to help the department continue to offer a high-quality education to its majors.
What do Speech Communication Leaders do?
Leaders serve the department in several ways. They (1) assist with the planning of academic and social events (such as student-faculty receptions, faculty lectures, career information session, graduate school information sessions, commencement), (2) help to publicize department events, (3) offer feedback on department matters (such as the website, course offerings, course titles), and (4) socialize with alumni who visit campus as guests of the department. Leaders devote approximately eight hours a month to the organization.
What are the benefits of serving as a Speech Communication Leader?
It is an honor to serve as a Speech Communication Leader. Students have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while assisting the department. Students can also develop stronger relationships with faculty through closer involvement in departmental activities. Members can list the organization on their résumé as evidence of excellence in the major.
Who is eligible to apply?
Students apply in the spring for the following academic year. Undergraduates who have a 3.25 GPA in the major (or first-year students with an overall GPA of 3.50 or higher) are welcome to apply.
What is the application process?
Eligible students should complete an application form by noon on Friday, March 28, 2008. See the application form for details.
What are the selection criteria?
Students are chosen based on their potential to be enthusiastic, organized, and motivated representatives of the department. Selection criterion include (a) academic performance, (b) leadership experience, and (c) communication skills.
